Wrapping up Christmas turkey
With Christmas approaching, turkey producers are being reminded of the importance of packaging, with the NFU highlighting its service which provides generic boxes, leaflets, leg tags and a host of other consumer regalia to help push sales.
“Quality packaging is another way of differentiating your turkeys so the boxes and other promotional items are an excellent way of doing this,” said Mike Bailey, a seasonal producer and vice-chairman of the NFU poultry board.
“The contemporary, luxury branding is designed to attract consumers who are prepared to pay a bit extra in the knowledge they are purchasing a superior bird for their family at Christmas.”
In Wales, NFU Cymru held its annual turkey marketing meeting with producers told they could retail their birds on the NFU’s site as well.
“It is time we championed what we produce and we have to market our end products more effectively,” said Tony Burgess, NFU Cymru Poultry Board chairman at the recent Turkey Marketing Meeting.
“Our poultry products are reared on traditional local farms, where achieving high levels of animal health and welfare standards is extremely important to us as Welsh producers.”
On the ukturkeys.co.uk site consumers can put in their postcode and it will return links to nearby turkey producers.
The last date packaging can be ordered from ukturkeys.co.uk/shop/ is 9 December.
