Purely Pickled Egg Ltd, from Stroud, Gloucestershire, sells a range of flavoured free range pickled hen and quail eggs online and across shops, pubs and at festivals.
While a pickled egg used to be synonymous as a late night snack, the company is offering one year’s supply of pickled eggs in its Serious Jars for £225.
The company won a £5,000 grant after showcasing their ground breaking solution to day-to-day problems at a special Food Innovation Network awards event, which was run by Innovate UK and the Knowledge Transfer Network to encourage companies to examine ways they can revolutionise the food and drink sector.
Judges were impressed with Purely Pickled Eggs Ltd’s plans to identify novel ways of packaging pickled eggs to make sure they are in a plentiful supply to go with its fish and chips. The company is exploring new methods of applying current application and preservation methods.
Food and Farming Minister George Eustice said: “Innovation is key to ensuring Britain’s successful food and drink industry continues to grow, which is why it was great to see such an exciting display of ingenuity from smaller businesses – who often do not have the same research resources available to them as larger companies.”
Purely Pickled Eggs said on twitter: “Very egg-cited to be winners of a Food Innovation Award. The pickled egg journey just got a whole lot more exciting.”
