Proposals to boost production at 2 Sisters’ Llangefni plant
Trade union Unite is in talks with 2 Sisters Food Group about proposed changes to working patterns that could double the number of workers at its Llangefni processing plant, Anglesey.
A 45-day consultation over the proposed introduction of double shifts has been announced, with the potential to increase production at the site. Both parties were undertaking talks with a “view to reaching agreement”, said a joint statement between the union and 2 Sisters Food Group.
“Subject to agreement, these changes are expected to generate in excess of 200 job opportunities at the Llangefni site,” said the statement, which is signed by Stuart Dean, general manager at the Llangefni plant and Paddy McNaught, regional industrial organiser for Unite. “The union welcomed the positive move by 2 Sisters Food Group, at a time when job opportunities are greatly needed.”
In early April Welsh Country Foods, a lamb abattoir on Anglesey that was previously owned by Vion closed and 300 people were made redundant. Mr McNaught said these workers would have transferable skills if more jobs became available at the Llangefni plant.
The statement added that 2 Sisters Poultry remained loss making. “The business continues to operate in a very challenging environment.”
A spokesperson for 2 Sisters said that these discussions were just proposals at this stage.
“The Vion Poultry business faced a very uncertain and unviable future prior to 2 Sisters intervention last month. It continues to see very challenging market conditions and will need significant effort from all stakeholders in order to secure a more viable future.”
