Vion recognised for cutting water use at poultry plant

Vion UK’s Anglesey plant has been shortlisted in this year’s Water Efficiency Awards in the Saving Water category.
Organised by The Environment Agency, the awards aim to recognise achievements in promoting water efficiency.
After an Envirowise water audit, the company implemented a water minimisation project, which resulted in a 19% reduction in use.
First, the company replaced its standard 1in hoses with pressure washers and lances, which ensured three times less water was used with the same results. In addition, water pressure within the factory was reduced as a whole.
Some sprays in the second row of Featherators (water machines which remove feathers) were switched off as deemed unnecessary and the relocation of packing room to the source of collection has ensured large amounts of water are no longer necessary to carry the product to the packing room.
As a final precaution, Vion UK now regularly monitor its volumes of water using telemetry to read their main water meter and use manual readings of sub-meters installed around the site.
The winner will be announced at a ceremony in London on 15 July.
