About 20 agricultural students at Shuttleworth College, near Bedford are protesting at the institution’s decision to get rid of the herd of pigs housed on college grounds.
The students claim hands-on experience with the pigs is invaluable to their education and without them they will have just three cattle and 80 acres to work with.
Some of the students are so incensed that they are threatening to quit their courses, just months before they end.
The pigs are due to go at the end of the academic year and will be replaced with additional facilities for animal care students.
A statment from the college said: “As part of college’s annual planning and review processes, resources for the delivery of agriculture courses at Shuttleworth College are being reviewed. No decisions have been made and the college is currently consulting on a number of options.
“The college strives to provide its students with a quality learning experience in all its vocational areas and will continue to provide the resources necessary to deliver the agreed curriculum.”
