Welsh meat sales on the rise in 2008 according to Hybu Cig Cymru

Retail sales of Welsh lamb and beef rose significantly in the first two months of 2008.

Bill Joyce, marketing manager of Hybu Cig Cymru (Meat Promotion Wales), said new figures indicated that sales of most cuts of lamb and beef were 5% up.

In January, overall fresh and frozen lamb sales were 8.2% up on the first month of 2007 and expenditure on lamb frying and grilling steaks and stewing lamb rose 19.5 and 18.7%, respectively.

January and February sales of minced beef and beef steaks were almost 10% higher and there was significantly increased demand for roasting joints and stewing beef.

Mr Joyce attributed the rises to the “determined programme of promotional activity” carried out by HCC over the past year.
