Chinese-made GWM Poer300 adds to diesel pickup options

China’s Great Wall Motor Co (GWM) is having another crack at the pickup market after a lengthy absence, with a new diesel-fuelled double-cab model.

In markets such as Australia the vehicle is called the Cannon Ute, but here it’s the Poer300 (for pronunciation just picture the name with a “w” in it).

It comes ready for farm work with a 1t payload capacity and 3.5t towing ability.

Its chunky body is supported on front coil springs and rear leaf suspension, and it sports a 2.4-litre turbo-diesel under the hood, maxing out at 183hp and 480Nm while promising – on a combined cycle – fuel consumption of a smidgen over 32mpg.

A new nine-speed automatic transmission, full-time four-wheel drive in both high and low ranges, plus an electronically activated rear differential lock, build the vehicle’s on- and off-road credentials.

And there’s also a suite of electronic driver assistance modes for the powertrain, including “snow”, “mud” and “sand” for off-highway action, in addition to the usual normal, eco and sport settings.

Broad spec

Full-length side steps, black roof rails and a chromed “sports bar” adorn the exterior, while materials inside the five-seat cabin are described as “premium soft-touch”.

Upgrade from the base Lux edition – which includes “leatherette” seat upholstery, keyless entry, rear parking sensors and a number of safety assistance features.

Upgrade to an Ultra and the seats become both heated and ventilated, the cabin windows are darkened, and a sunroof lets in more light.

Vanta spec, meanwhile, blacks out all exterior trim, the wheel arches and the 18in alloy wheels that are common to all variants.

A five-year, 125,000-mile warranty backs up GWM’s confidence in the vehicle, prices for which start at £31,495 (excluding VAT) on the road.
