Steel and Keruing combine in retro tipping Defender load bed

Wood rarely gets a look-in on road-going vehicles these days, which makes Southern Vehicle Bodies’ tipping load bed all the more eye-catching.
Custom-built for a Guernsey cider producer’s Land Rover 110, it features a galvanised-steel frame clad with 22mm Keruing hardwood boards, a 15mm aluminium floor and cab-height headboard.

Folding sides are held in place by good old Antiluce latches and, thanks to gudgeon-pin hinges, they’re easy to remove if needed.
It’s a similar story with the tailgate, which is fastened by four small drop-in pins.
More modern is the electro-hydraulic tipping unit and ram, which has a remote control in the cabin.
Fitment is simple, with the base frame of the body bolting directly to the vehicle’s chassis using existing mounting points.
The price of having a similar body built to order would be £4,500 to £5,000.
