Whether you want an ATV (aka quad bike) for checking sheep, putting on slug pellets or simply for a bit of leisure-time pleasure, there is a machine to suit every need. Peter Hill rounds up the latest developments.

Can-Am Outlander 400 |
With an influx of ATVs from China, Taiwan and other Asian sources joining established makes from Japan and North America, there has never been a greater choice of machines for work and play.
In a sense, the use of ATVs in Britain has come full circle: They started off as recreational vehicles in North America before being recognised for their work potential in the UK.
Now the big trend is towards leisure use here, particularly with machines complying with EU quadricycle rules in terms of things like braking and lighting. These ATVs can be ridden on the road by anyone with a full driver’s licence. That’s in contrast to those registered as agricultural vehicles – they can only be driven short distances on tarmac ie from one field gate to the next.

Honda Foreman TRX500FM |
While a bog-standard 350-450cc quad will be more than adequate for most farming users, there is a growing diversity of specifications and performance for those who want something a bit more adventurous. If you want exhilarating acceleration, for example, nothing beats a quad with an 800cc or 950cc engine nestling within the space frame.
Lively performance is not the strongest suit of the clutch of diesel-fuelled quads on offer, all bar one of which are built in Britain by enthusiasts of oil-burning engines.
Economy and access to a lower-priced fuel that is readily-available on farms are the main attractions here. But in the case of the Farmrite and Diesel Quads machines, hard-working durability is another factor, as both are built around heavy frames using automotive driveline components, something that can also make it relatively easy to obtain spares.

The Farmrite duo are unique for employing hydrostatic drive with individual wheel motors the iWork for being propelled by an electric motor. Based on the Odes chassis with the electric-drive installation performed in Europe, this machine would be especially attractive where the noise generated by a compression engine is a factor.
Honda’s Rincon is unusual for using a gearbox and hydraulic torque converter when most quads are motivated by a simple belt-and-pulley continuously variable transmission, which almost always now have engine braking, thank goodness.
The others rely on the skills of the operator handling a manual foot-operated gear change, the exceptions being Honda’s optional thumb-switch operated electric shift, which also is available in an auto-shift version.

Quadzilla 500 |
Another new development is Yamaha’s electric power steering it gives subtle assistance that helps keep the quad on the straight and narrow while easing the kick-back and extra effort needed when piloting a quad with four-wheel drive engaged.
Last, in case you’re wondering why the Massey Ferguson quads aren’t here, the answer is that MF has withdrawn from the quad bike market, leaving its supplier Arctic Cat to distribute the machines alone.
ATVS GROUPED BY ENGINE SIZE AND FUEL TYPE
