FW Inventions Comp 2023: Giles Teggin’s self-contained CCTV system

Third place in the intermediate category of the 2023 Farmers Weekly Inventions Competition went to Giles Teggin for his security system.
In a bid to stay one step ahead of local ne’er-do-wells, Mr Teggin rigged up a standalone security system housed within a shipping container.
This keeps it protected from unwelcome visitors and makes it suitable for remote locations away from mains power.

His setup uses solar panels mounted on the container roof, which run through a charge controller that regulates input to the 12V leisure battery.
As well as the cameras, this powers a 4G router that, via an aerial, broadcasts wi-fi to the farmyard.

He has also wired in an inverter to convert 12V DC into 240V AC, which can then be used to run tools and other devices on the farm.
The system includes three 5MP cameras with colour-enabled night vision, motion detection, bidirectional sound and a range of up to 40m.
Two of these are mounted inside the container to protect them from tampering.
Each has a memory card to store the footage, but it is also sent to an online repository run by Webeye that allows it to be viewed on an app or web platform from anywhere in the world.
