Farmer-made galvanised dog kennel gets slide-out floor

A Denbighshire sheep farmer has developed his take on a New Zealand-style outdoor dog kennel.

Alwyn Evans’ shelters are made almost entirely from galvanised steel, including the roof sheet, mesh front and slatted floor.

This makes them tough enough to house powerful breeds such as German Shepherds and Rottweilers – even if they’ve previously demonstrated a knack for the great escape.

The house stands roughly 30cm off the ground, allowing it to be easily hosed down and any detritus that falls through the slats swept up.

One of the kennel’s neater features is a pair of external bowl holders, complete with removable mesh frames to protect Pedigree Chum from vermin.

This means owners can complete catering duties outside the cage, with dogs poking their heads through the front openings to dine and drink.

Once satiated, they can retire to the sleeping quarters. These feature a plywood-lined roof and pull-out deck, and the area can also be insulated with internal panels to keep it warm in the winter.

To take the chill off further, buyers can spec fibreglass slats as an alternative to steel.

Alwyn currently offers two versions of his galvanised dog kennel. The “single” measures 1.8x1m and costs £1,085 plus VAT, while the “double” is 2×1.8m and £1,935.

He also makes dog boxes and walk-through sheep crushes.
