Modified by Southcave Tractors, this Mercedes-Benz Unimog U400 is thought to be the first in Europe to have a direct-drive rear PTO unit fitted.
The 290hp machine is capable of carrying out most tasks involving a PTO, including baling, power harrow work and even drilling, claims Southcave’s Tony Levitt. And, because the 540/1000 rpm PTO is powered direct from the engine, it loses less hp.
Research carried out by the DLG, also presented at LAMMA, suggested that for haulage, a Unimog would use on average 40% less fuel than an equivalent highspeed tractor.
Prices for the pto-equipped machine start at £105,000.
