School winners make menus fit for the Queen

Four schools have won The Duchess of Cornwall’s competition inviting schools to create a special Diamond Jubilee menu for the Queen.
Cape Cornwall School near Penzance, Latimer Arts College near Kettering, St Columba’s Primary School from Oban and Eastington Primary School from Gloucestershire netted the honours in this contest, which was launched as part of British Food Fortnight.
They were selected from more than 200 entries by Mark Flanagan, royal chef at Buckingham Palace, who considered such factors as the amount of extra-curricular research that had been done, how much they used local produce and whether their menus truly are fit for the Queen.
The four schools are now being invited to Buckingham Palace this month to see their recipes prepared and will help serve them at a special reception attended by the Queen and Duchess of Cornwall.
The menus include dishes such as Beefeater’s Delight (Duchess potatoes with horseradish and Gloucester beef) and Dainty Elizabeth (sage and onion scone nesting on a bird with a fanned turkey meat tail, a quail’s egg body and a carved tomato head and beak).
“Professional chefs across the country wanting to offer Diamond Jubilee menus in their pubs, hotels and restaurants could draw inspiration from what the children have come up with,” says organiser Alexia Robinson.
