UK Grain: Kiln-drying minimises drying floor shrinkage

Ventilation specialist FLR CropDrying is now having all the Keuring hardwood used in its crop drying floors kiln dried before machining to minimise shrinkage. A wax finish is then applied as further protection.
Design features such as the generous width bearers (topped by an upright plywood strip) stainless steel edging around lift-out panel openings and the way the ends of the perforated strips are finished all aim to prevent grain and air leakage while adding to the durability of the installation.
“Softwood flooring is about 20% cheaper, but we think the hardwood premium is worth it for a long service life and sustained performance,” says co-founder and production manager Owen Le-Roy.
