£20k research award

RESEARCH into the land and farm business management implications of increasing the rate of modulation has been commissioned by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

It has awarded a £20,000 research contract to Harper Adams University College and the Scottish Agricultural College to look into the issue.

They will examine the consequences of switching money away from production subsidies into environmental and rural development schemes.

The move follows a proposal within Sir Donald Currys policy commission report on the future of farming which said that the modulation rate should be increased to 10% in 2004. The results are expected in late summer. &#42
