200m rule rethink?
GOVERNMENT officials may reconsider guidelines on the minimum separation distances between genetically modified (GM) crops and conventional varieties.
Environment minister Michael Meacher said he would consider increasing separation distances bey-ond the existing 200m requirement to protect organic farmers from the dangers of cross-pollination.
"The last word on this has not been spoken. I will be having discussions with the Soil Association and other organisations concerned with the organic position," he said. *
