3000 farms escape disease-control net

MORE than 3000 farms have been freed from foot-and-mouth movement restrictions, the Ministry of Agriculture announced on Friday (18 May).
Infected-area restrictions have been lifted on 1904 farms around Hinckley and Nuneaton, covering parts of Leicestershire and Warwickshire.
A further 1282 farms have been freed in the Macclesfield area, spanning Cheshire and Derbyshire.
In total around 21,000 farms have now had infected-area restrictions lifted.
Infected-area restrictions are still in place in other parts of the Midlands/Wales infected area.
Farmers who have been freed can now take animals to slaughterhouses, and can move livestock more freely under the livestock movement schemes.
Optimism grew that the epidemic was coming to an end after no new cases of the disease were reported on Thursday.
However, on Friday morning three new outbreaks were confirmed, taking the UK total to 1610.
Meanwhile, MAFF has revised its figures on the number of premises on which animals have been or are due to be slaughtered down 200 to 7367.
It says the figure is smaller than previously reported as 200 premises where slaughtering took place on more than one occasion were being counted twice.
