3000gns peak at Western fixture

A 3000gns top call was the highlight of the latest Western Holstein Club show and sale at Beeston Castle in Cheshire where good quality calved heifers continued to meet a healthy trade, with 56 head levelling at £850.

From the 100 catalogued entries only 12 were not forward giving judge John Hodgson from the Carlisle-based Holmeden herd a good selection.

Andrew and Belinda Foxs red-and-white cow Copywood Milestone Tina Lea Red was the championship winner. This second calver is classified VG-85 and represents six generations of cows registered in the top two grades. She is by Brooknook Milestone-ET-Red and out of the Renown Factor-sired Manorpowis Renown Tina Red. Her grand-dam was the famous brood cow Kentville Tina Lea Red.

She also topped the trade at 3000gns after a tussle of ringside and phone bids and now joins the herd of R L Edwards at Whitchurch.

The overall average was £6 down on four weeks ago and although the best sorts sold well, any second grade heifers were difficult to cash. Buyers were prepared to go to 2000gns for D R and E A Jones Atok Integrity Bonnie from their herd in Herefordshire. This July-calving cow is out of Weeton Prelude Bonnie, which made 3400gns at the 1994 Weeton sale and traces back to Altona Lea Warden Blackie as third dam. Buyer was Peter Andrews, Hereford.

The reserve female champion was the plum choice of volume bidders Tollemache Farms, Tarporley, Cheshire. They snapped up 17 head but gave most for the runner-up investing 1650gns in Fenshall Vision Sietske. Consigned by A W Jones, Whitchurch, she is by Kemview Vanetas Vision and out of a VG-88 Aerostar Raven dam.

Other fancied lots included a Cogent Nebulon heifer from the Iford herd of Kidderminster vendors B and E Carr, which made 1300gns to R L Edwards and 1220gns given by J R Williams, Nantwich, Cheshire, for Mileoak Novalis Pathea consigned by J K Smith and Son, Crewe.

Three bulls from the Smiddiehill herd of Lees Dairy Farm at Market Drayton found buyers. Smiddiehill Storm (by Maughlin Storm) made 1400gns to P and D Martin, Bradford; Smiddiehill Bronson (by Wa-Del Convincer) made 1300gns to &#42 Kennedy, Ayrshire, and Smiddiehill Stan (by Regancrest Elton Dante) made 1200gns to A W Studley, Wrexham (Wright Manley). &#42
