ACAF gives the nod for use of fishmeal in feed
FISHMEAL is safe to use in animal feed and the UK should press for its retention in all feed rations, according to the governments Advisory Committee on Animal Feedingstuffs (ACAF).
The report concludes that fishmeal represents no threat to human or animal health and UK controls ensure there is no significant risk of fishmeal contamination by meat and bonemeal.
Fishmeal Information Network (FIN) chairman, David Stringer, is delighted with the report. "We are extremely encouraged by the independent view of ACAF that fishmeal is a safe feed ingredient, with clear nutritional and animal welfare benefits."
But use of fishmeal for UK livestock remains threatened by an EU animal protein ban, which has not yet been enforced here.
EU member states are considering extending the animal protein ban beyond June 30, a move which FIN would strongly resist, says Mr Stringer.
ACAF seems to agree. It also recommends the UK seeks exemption from the temporary EU ban. *
