Alliance ‘lining up human rights case’
By FWi staff
THE Countryside Alliance is set to launch a challenge under the Human Rights Act if MPs vote for a complete ban on hunting, reports The Guardian.
Human rights barrister Edward Fitzgerald QC says there is a strong case for arguing against a ban.
Lawyers could argue a ban would breach rights to enjoyment of property and respect for private life guaranteed by the European Convention on human rights.
The bill on hunting, which has its second reading next Monday, will allow MPs three choices.
They can vote to ban hunting with hounds; to take a “middle way” under which hunts would be regulated by statute; or to allow self-regulation.
