Anti-ACCS move

THE farmers group opposed to the Assured Combinable Crops Scheme has been bolstered by a pledge of support from the NFU and now plans to launch its own alternative scheme in June.

Michael Cook, a spokesman for Midland Farmers Action Group, said the NFU was offering to help the group draw up its proposals and would provide specialist staff to work on the scheme. A pledge from a senior official that the union was "happy to help wherever possible", had also been made.

Mr Cook added that a further 500 producers had promised support for the livestock and arable assurance initiative this week alone. The growing support from farmers already registered with ACCS was particularly pleasing.

"We have also been in closed and confidential talks with one of the major agricultural traders and numerous smaller operations, with very positive feedback," he said.

"We are delighted with the response to our calls for support and the trade is inquiring positively about our plans. Most fair-minded people can see the flaws in the current schemes and our practical approach is winning many friends."

Supporters who demonstrate their commitment and subscribe to the initiative in these early days will receive a discount on membership in year one. And those arable farmers who are fully registered with ACCS for 1999 would be offered associate membership for the first season, he added.
