APEC liberalisation hopes hit by Asian crisis

LEADERS of Pacific Rim countries face a frustrating time trying to agree a new liberalisation package when they meet next month. The Asian crisis has made them extremely concerned about opening up their markets to imports.

The Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) forum has been working on a voluntary agreement for free trade in 15 selected sectors, including agriculture, since its last meeting in Vancouver.

Japan, in particular, is continuing to resist liberalisation of farm products.
