James Lynch is renowned for his pictures of animals and landscapes of which Cockerel and Hen (above/left) and Oxford Sandy Pig (above left/right) are fine examples.

The special quality of the light which bathes his subjects and scenes – which The Times critic John Russell Taylor describes as "magical" – helps set them apart from the work of other modern artists.

The Maas Gallery, 1a Clifford Street, London, is staging another James Lynch exhibition this month (Oct 15-31) when 30 of his new tempera on panel paintings will be on show.
