• Prices crossed the £1000 barrier for the first time this year at Carmarthens weekly dairy sales when a bid of £1040 was taken for a smart two-year-old fresh calved heifer consigned by Geoff Williams of Hay-on-Wye. Purchaser was George Llewelyn of Wiston.
• Hay and straw supplies were affected by fuel shortages this week with auctioneers at Chelford noting a steady trade for the 13 loads put forward. Best hay averaged £73/t, small barley bales £59/t and small wheat bales £48/t.
• Young ewes were in demand edging prices up £8-10/head on last year at John Swan & Sons annual sale of draft ewes at St Boswells. Averages were: Half Bred four crop ewes £32.40, three crop £38.35. Scotch Mule four crop ewes ££28.26 and three crop £33.45 each. *
