FARMERS WEEKLY wants to say a big thank you to everyone who has donated money and given help and support to those in need following the foot-and-mouth outbreak.
Money contributed to the emergency funds is throwing a lifeline to many families. Every penny really does make a difference. People have also rallied round to support farmers, with acts of kindness, offers of support and resources.
The Worshipful Com-pany of Farmers, one of the 102 City of London livery companies, has given £6000 to the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution and the Rural Stress Information Network. The company -which supports education and promotes a better understanding of agriculture across the nation – hopes to make further donations as, according to its master, Richard Brooks, the "severe hardship will be long-lasting".
Regional food group Taste of the West raised £300 for RABI at a day-long celebration of Wiltshires food and drink. A collection was made at a Salisbury church following a service by the Bishop of Ramsbury, Peter Hutton, which celebrated food, drink and the landscape.
Afterwards, there was an exhibition at which local food and drink producers could display their products to local buyers. "In this time of crisis, I hope Taste of the West has given the agri-food sector in Wiltshire a real shot in the arm and sent the important and positive message that you can buy local, as more or less all you need is on your doorstep," said the groups Paul Fisher.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum has given £1m to charities offering cash and practical help to farmers and rural communities. Sheikh Maktoum, well known for his interest in the bloodstock and racing industries, has chosen the RABI, the Royal Scottish Agricultural Benevolent Institution, the Farm Crisis Network and the ARC-Addington Fund.
