What really matters in maize varieties?

Remember the last time you complained to your feed rep about cows not milking well on a batch of cake?

But when was the last time you complained to your seed merchant about cows not reaching their potential on forage maize? Probably never. After all, the only differences between maize varieties worth worrying about are yield, maturity date and starch content. Or are they?

One breeder feels so strongly that the current maize listing system is letting farmers down, it has withdrawn from national trials. Since maize forms a significant proportion of many dairy rations, isnt it time we focused on its feeding characteristics rather than worrying about whether the cobs are hard enough?
