• Powys breeder Bill Davies dispersed his Hiddenvalley herd at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, to a top of 4000gns paid by DK Jones, Prestiegne, for the 1992-bred cow Hiddenvalley Hendaye 20th. By To-Mar Twister and out of a 14,000kg Whittier-Farms Ned Boy dam, she gave 11,800kg with her fifth. Dalston, Carlisle, bidders J and * Shadwick took the young Mandel-sired cow Hiddenvalley Mandel Della at 3200gns. She traces back to the great Snow-N-Denises Dellia. A and C Watson from Cockermouth, Cumbria, gave 2600gns for a Jolt cow out of an Aerostar x Hanoverhilll Roxette dam. While Messrs Holgate from Settle, North Yorks, continue to pick up choice cattle for restocking and paid 2200gns for a calved heifer by Milkin Galaxy out of a Dannix dam.
Averages 113 cows and heifers £1139; 57 served and maiden heifers £933 (Harrison & Hetherington).
• A third calver by Rudolph with a second lactation of 11,200kg realised 2000gns when Mid-Lothian dairy farmers P McCluskey and Sons dispersed their Rosslyn herd at Carlisle. There were two other deals at 1800gns – T Hodge, Duns, Berwickshire, took a milking heifer by Jolt out of a 12,000kg Baltier cow by Aerostar and EC Spence and Son, Hexham, opted for a Leadership milking heifer out of a 13,000kg Starbuck dam bred at Mouldyhills and from the Ultimate Squaw family (Harrison & Hetherington).
• West Country breeders tapped into some fashionable breeding when Ruth Sargeant dispersed her Treweatha herd at Hallworthy Stockyard, Cornwall. Top call was 3100gns for the 1998-bred cow Wilcove Rudolph Clarissa. She was out of a Leadership dam which gave over 10,000kg with her second and has the 13,400kg Mussbee Clarissa as second dam. She is in-calf to Fatal for June and was bought by S Poad, Blunts, Cornwall. Her June 2001-born heifer calf by Fermo Aerostar Raven made 2000gns to DR Andrews, Sparkwell. Mr Poad also gave 2400gns for Mussbee Rudolph Vanessa out of the 17,000kg Aquila Prelude Elvira (KVN Stockdale).
