Argentine lemon success story
THE Argentine province of Tucuman has seen an “agricultural revolution” in its lemon industry which is “quietly taking the world by storm”, according to the Financial Times.
The business has grown from virtually zero a couple of decades ago to take 12% of the world market.
Local lemon producer San Miguel is now the worlds largest independent producer and exporter.
The company has invested more than US$75 million since 1993 and will spend a further $20m over the next two or three years. It is aiming to increase output by 7% a year.
More than four-fifths of production is exported.
