Asda chief quite to ‘go plural’

By FWi staff

THE head of Wal-Marts European operation has quit just a year after the American retailing giant bought Asda supermarkets.

Allan Leighton denied rumours that he was leaving to take up a post with Marks and Spencer, or that he was to head a bid for the retailer, reports The Daily Telegraph.

Mr Leighton said he was leaving to go plural and do four of five things at once, but did not want to be a chief executive.

At the time of the Wal-Mart takeover, Asda claimed the deal would benefit British farmers to the tune of 80m through the extension of its Buy British scheme.
