Assembly stokes Welsh burial protests
By Robert Davies, Wales correspondent
PROTESTS against the disposal of livestock carcasses on military range in Wales are set to escalate following a Welsh Assembly statement.
Excavations at the Eppynt range, Carmarthen, can hold 180,000 animals – nearly four times the number expected to be slaughtered on farms in Powys.
The statement, released on Wednesday (4 April) reveals that there is room to double that capacity, but no decision had been taken about starting work.
But it denied suggestions that one million carcasses will be taken to the site.
Local people who oppose using the site on health grounds and the risk to the environment, have published 20,000 leaflets to publicise their campaign.
They are constructing a website seeking support from outside the immediate area and may take their battle to the European Court of Human Rights.
