Australian port loses appeal against strikers

A MELBOURNE federal court dismissed an appeal by Patrick Stevedores, Australias second largest port operator, against Tuesdays ruling that it reinstate 1,400 dismissed dockworkers.

The court is to hold a full hearing on the Maritime Union of Australias claims that it was the victim of an illegal union-busting conspiracy between Patrick, the government and the National Farmers Federation.

The companys chief executive Chris Corrigan said the reinstatement order was unworkable and signalled that he would lodge an appeal with the High Court.
