Ayrshires meet good trade at sales

AYRSHIRE cattle have been meeting a good trade at three recent breed sales in Cheshire, Glos, and Cumbria.

Ronnie Marshall Brooks Portal herd was dispersed at Bourton-on-the-Water, Glos where prices reached 1160gns for a freshly-calved heifer by Cuthill Towers Sir Adam.

Portal Roulette 2nd, out of a 6900kg dam, joins the Penrhallt herd of Phillip and Thelma Jeffries at Welshpool.

Messrs M and A Partington, Yeovil gave 1010gns for a freshly-calved heifer by Salmondsbury Blue Ribbon for their Portway herd and D G Whistance, Hereford claimed 25 cows.

A Crewe sale for Cheshire breeders saw Alan Coutts and Son share the top price when their Knutsford Darkie 56th, by Ballyclan First Command, realised 1020gns to W &#42 Slater Farms, Shifnal, Shropshire.

Leaventhorpe Hester 41st from R and E Burt and Son, Nantwich also made 1020gns to Alan Norbury, Knutsford.

Top at the red-and-white offering at Carlisle was Morwick Sandra 72nd, a calved heifer by Cuthill Towers Gold Medal that stood reserve champion and was bought for 1080gns by R Lockey, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

AVERAGES: Portal: 90 cows £443. Crewe: £649. Carlisle: eight cows £597; 13 heifers in-calf £570 and 30 heifers in-milk £682.n
