B&W delights at Portadown

SOME of the worlds most renowned black-and-white cattle genetics proved irresistible to buyers around the Portadown ringside when they competed for a son of the great cow Glen Drummond Shower.

The occasion was the bull show and sale for the Northern Ireland Holstein Friesian Breeders Club and the animal everyone wanted was David Wilsons Gravehill Sheriff.

This bulls 14,242kg Enhancer dam is on a continuous flushing programme to meet the worldwide demand for progeny. Sheriff, bred at Mr Wilsons farm at Newtownabbey, Co Antrim, is by Evreux Cle. He won his class and from a bidding start of 1700gns soon reached the days top price of 2100gns paid by C McAuley and Sons, Toomebridge, Co Antrim.

John and Alan Patterson brought a single entry from their successful herd at Donaghadee. Herdstown Juniper, a Rotate Jed son, is bred out of the Hanoverhill Raider daughter Herdstown Rachel 320th – a member of one of the herds most prolific cow families.

Juniper, a bull with high protein figures behind him, stood champion under judge Mr William Crawford (Brookeborough), and made 1800gns to A McFarlane, Co Down.

The reserve ticket went to Ballymena-based Boyd Bros with Ballylummin Valency, a bull bred from parents with roots in Lancashire – his sire is Weeton Celebration and his dam Stardale Counsellor Vaakje 4th. Buyers at 1550gns were C and D Cunningham, Newtownards, Co Down. (Automart) &#42
