Ban GM crops, say agencies
FOUR government conservation agencies have called on farm minister Jack Cunningham to impose a three-year moratorium on growing genetically modified crops.
They believe the ban is justified because research on the impact GM varieties could have on wildlife and other plants will not be completed and analysed for another three years.
Widespread destruction
English Nature, The Countryside Council for Wales, Scottish Natural Heritage and the Northern Ireland Environment and Heritage Service are concerned about the potential widespread destruction of native birds and insects, including ladybirds, and the transfer of modified genes that could lead to aggressive, non-controllable weeds.
