Banana replanting begins in Honduras
CHIQUITA Brands this month begins replanting bananas on its estates in Honduras that were destroyed by Hurricane Mitch in October.
Steven Warshaw, president of the US fruit company, said the company hoped to recover its entire productive capacity in the country in the next two years.
Chiquita expects to replant 3000ha (7412 acres) of bananas in Honduras this year and exports are expected to resume in early 2000.
Before the hurricane, Chiquita had around 7400ha (18,285 acres) of plantations in Honduras, accounting for about 15% of its production.
Bananas were the countrys second largest export after coffee in 1997, generating about £120 million in exports.
