Barley yields well on Notts sand

ROBERT BOWER, who farms on light sandy soil at Carburton near Worksop, has had above average yields with Regina barley.

He finished the crop on Thursday, yielding an estimated 6.1-6.7t/ha (2.5-2.7t/acre). “Its done well, a good average is 2.25-2.5t/acre (5.6-6.1t/ha), and so better than expected.”

He says early drilled Optic spring barley should be ready next week. Some was drilled in May after carrots and is expected to be another three weeks.

“It looks really good considering. Everyone is quite impressed.”
