Beginner’s guide to sewage sludge
THE “College Comment” section of The Herald deals this week with the use of sewage sludge on farmland.
Many of the regulations governing its handling are set out by the British Retail Consortium which represents all the major supermarkets.
The use of untreated sludge on grassland ceased at the end of 1998 and on combinable and animal feed crops by the end of 1999.
The application of treated sludge to the surface of grazed grassland ceased at the end of 1998 and only deep injection is allowed on grassland used for grazing.
