Beware meat rule complexity
WHEN selling meat direct to consumers, many producers are acting illegally because they misunderstand complicated legislation set out in the Fresh Meat Hygiene and Inspection rules.
Peter Hewson, head of Veterinary Public Health with the Food Standards Agency, said legislation changes may help avoid problems as it is undergoing a review in Brussels.
"We want to consult with farmers and get feedback so we know the nature of trading taking place, such as Farmers Markets and internet sales, which will be taken into account when modernising regulations.
"We do not want to hinder the producer, but public health protection is the number one priority," said Mr Hewson. *
