STAFFS Jersey breeder Jimmy Irving achieved a new breed record for a milking herd dispersal at the sale of stock from his Janhaven herd.
This sale saw over half the cattle on offer from this productive herd make four-figure bids.
Top call of 4600gns came for Janhaven Cathy VG87, a third calver by Highland Duncan Lester, which gave 8121kg in her second lactation. She is bred from one of the shrewd purchases bought at the late Ken Timburys Wellhead herd dispersal.
Cathy, who was claimed by R L Poulter, Isle of Wight, had a second lactation value of £2473.
Mr Poulter also took one of the choicest lots on offer when he paid 3700gns for the stylish cow Wellhead Kanes Peppermint Ex 91. She was breed champion at last months European Dairy Farming Event after taking the supreme title at the National Jersey Show and reserve inter-breed championship at the Cheshire Show. Peppermint gave 7300kg in her fourth note and over 8000kg in her fifth.
Mr Poulter invested a further 3200gns in Janhaven Elegance, winner of the in-milk heifer class at the Cheshire Show and 2800gns in the pure American-bred maiden heifer Janhaven Fancy Sue Ann. This daughter of Comfort Royal Alf is out of a twice 10,000kg dam.
The Bells Expo-sired calved heifer Janhaven Emily, winner of the interbreed heifer championship at the EDFE, made 4500gns to J D Anderson, Elgin, Morayshire.
The Janhaven herd has only been established six years and now has a herd average of 6500kg.
