British Macs stand proud

BURGER giant McDonalds is the latest catering firm to join the NFUs "Proud to Serve British" scheme.

On the opening day of the show, union president Ben Gill welcomed the development – part of the nationwide initiative to put more British food on the nations menus by encouraging restaurants, cafes, pubs and other catering outlets to source British wherever possible.

Each McDonalds restaurant will be sent "Proud to Serve British" posters and point-of-sale material to display to promote the £40m-plus the firm spends on British beef, in addition to the 166,000t of potatoes, 142,000t of flour, 3,700t of lettuce and 650,000t of onions it sources from the UK.

"We are very pleased to have a major restaurant company such as McDonalds backing our campaign. This show of support clearly demonstrates the quality of British food," Mr Gill said.

Other major groups which have signed up to the initiative recently include County Hotels and the Ministry of Defence catering supply firm Booker Foodservice.
