Britons take to pork in a big way
BRITISH pork consumption figures for the final quarter of 1997 were 10.5% higher on average than for the same period the year before.
The Meat and Livestock Commission reported a 17.5% increase in the three months in supermarket sales.
On a regional basis, the biggest rise in pork sales was the 40% jump seen in the south-west. A 21% increase was recorded in Scotland.
MLC pigmeat product manager Andrew Garvey said: "The continuing rise in pork sales is excellent news for the pig industry which has worked hard to produce a first class product. Now we must consolidate and expand on these impressive figures."
