GOVERNMENT scientists are drawing up plans to plant thousands of hectares of elephant grass to meet energy needs, reports The Independent
Farm minister Nick Brown will tell the British Biogen conference in Cambridge that elephant grass has “real potential” as a renewable energy source.
He is backing trials at 10 research centres using miscanthus elephant grass for generating power.
Nick Brown will also praise a straw-burning power station in Ely, Cambridgeshire, at the conference on Wednesday (21 February).
Elephant grass production could begin late next year.
