BSE mandarins off the hook

CIVIL servants will not be disciplined for their part in the BSE fiasco, ministers have decided.

Fifteen civil servants and five ministers were criticised in Lord Phillips Inquiry. Many of the civil servants have subsequently retired or resigned, reports The Guardian.

In response to the inquiry ministers set up a review led by Sheila Forbes, a civil service commissioner.

The newspaper says her recommendations may be published within the next few days “and lift the shadow hanging over the civil servants careers”.

It notes that agriculture minister Nick Brown has strongly hinted that he opposes disciplinary action against civil servants.
