BSE-type disease in N American wildlife

By FWi staff

TESTS may be conducted on wild deer in the UK after an outbreak of a BSE-type disease in deer in North America, reports The Daily Telegraph.

The Deer Commission has asked the State Veterinary Service to carry out tests for chronic wasting disease (CWD).

Livestock, elk and bison were culled in Saskatchewan, northern Canada and animals have also been slaughtered in the USA where the disease was found.

The newspaper says CWD has been linked to the deaths of three hunters who died of Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease.

CWD is reported to have identical symptoms to BSE and is fatal.
