Bumper Pakistan cotton harvest predicted

PAKISTAN is expected to see a bumper cotton harvest for the first time in three years.

Official estimates put production at 10.8 million bales, more than 30% up on last year.

Prices are not expected to fall as a result. Reports of crop damage after the floods in China have added to domestic exporters views that prices will remain high in international markets.

The Government has encouraged farmers to reduce their use of pesticide. For their part, farmers have criticised Government research institutes for their failure to introduce seed varieties resistant to pest attacks.
