Buy on calves strength

WHEN Limousins from Aberdeenshire breeder William MacGillivrays Fleenas-na-gael herd were offered at Carlisle, a four-year-old stock bull made 5500gns "on the strength of his calves".

Fleenas-na-gael Jarrod, a son of noted conformation sire Djerk and out of Sunnybrae Eleanor, was bought by Carlisle farmers Joseph and Doreen Forster, Greenhead.

"We saw his calves before the sale and they all had the same stamp," said Mr Forster. "They were long, growthy calves, just the type of beast thats wanted."

Mr MacGillivrays neighbour David MacArthur, Nairn made his first investment in pure-bred Limousin paying 2700gns for a cow and calf outfit. His investment had been driven by the spring-born bull calf Fleenas-na-gael Onyx.

This Jarrod son was sold suckling his 1989-bred dam Banville Emanuelle who was in-calf to Jarrod for next spring.

Another 2700gns call came from T R and E A Milburn, Greenhead, Carlisle for Fleenas-na-gael Lyn. The 14 Fleenas-na-gael female averaged £1627. &#42
