California expects almond glut
CALIFORNIA is expecting to produce another bumper almond harvest this year and is facing a problem
This years harvest is put at 830m tonnes this year – 200m tonnes more than existing markets need.
One solution being put forward is that growers hold back just over 22% of their production from the market.
Another longer-term solution is the development of new products, for distance, one grower has developed a non-dairy milk.
The industry is also looking to develop untapped markets in Asia such as China, India or Indonesia.
California currently supplies three-quarters of global almond production.
