Calvings rise 10%

DELAYED inseminations due to foot-and-mouth are responsible for a 10% increase in calvings between March and May this year, compared with 2001, despite a slight decline in the number of NMR recorded cows.

"This is by far the most marked rise in calvings, comparing month on month from previous years, over the past five years, says NMRs Mike Blanshard. "This helps explain the rise in milk production over the past few months." Average daily production a cow in the first half of 2002 was also 4% above 2001, the highest seen in seven years. &#42
