CAP warning for veg

CAP reform of arable area payments could deal a serious blow to the vegetable sector, warns Lancs NFU policy adviser, Veronica Pitts.

The proposed single area payment which does not distinguish between cereals, oilseeds, linseeds and proteins means a savage aid cut for oilseed growers. That could mean a swing into more veg as an alternative break crop. "In some regions where vegetables are not traditionally grown it could lead to growers moving away from oilseeds as a break crop and switching to potatoes or other vegetable crops," says Miss Pitts.

Lancs growers hoped capital investment in gearing-up for such a change in break-cropping would hopefully discourage such a trend in non-vegetable growing areas. &#42
