ALL Brussels cash payments to English farmers will be handled by a single body from Oct 16 when the Rural Payments Agency comes into operation.

The new organisation will deal with all CAP schemes, previously covered by DEFRA and the Intervention Board, and should increase efficiency by avoiding duplication, according to an IB spokeswoman. "Hopefully claims will be processed quicker."

Farmers will initially see very little change to the claims procedures with regional service centres operating as before. However, by 2004 all RPA matters will be handled at just five centres rather than the current 11. &#42

The RPA will also operate in Scotland and Wales in conjunction with the regional governments.
